Sad Farewells

10/11/2017

Today we bid farewell to two prominent staff members who have given 100% in their years at Aspley Special - our BSM Leanne Gablonski, and our Principal, Chris Lassig.

Leanne began her 32 year career with the Qld Department of Education in 1985 as the Admin Officer at Buddina SS. Eventually she gained the position of registrar at Aspley Special School and began here on 10th Sept 2001.
Leanne quickly found out that Special Schools are a little “different” to what she was used to and are in many ways “special” themselves.
Leanne has worked tirelessly for Aspley Special School for the past 17+ years, in both a full time and part time capacity. Over the years her passion for art and craft has greatly benefitted the school. Leanne has always had a “matter of fact” attitude to work and life and a strong work ethic and we know this will be very helpful in her retirement.
Chris started his tour of duty at Aspley Special School in term 4 2007 as Acting Principal. He acquired the permanent position of Principal in 2008. Chris left an amazing legacy at Aspley Special School and is remembered for his implementation of an infrastructure program which saw a wonderful school hall built, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden set up, 8 new classrooms added and the new administration block and manual arts shed, just to name a few.
During his tenure here he was the driving force behind creating a new school vision, motto and logo and also established us as a model school for School Wide Positive Behaviour Support, now Positive behaviour for learning. He developed great community partnerships and fundraising initiatives for the school as well.
His “larger than life” personality and concern for staff, students and families was reflected in instigating our ongoing focus on wellbeing and support. He was also instrumental in helping to set up the afterschool care in collaboration with the YMCC.
The whole school community thank him for the vision and guidance he gave during the more than six years he was principal here.
We all wish Leanne and Chris the very best in their future endeavours.
